Simple Tricks to Help Your Dog Love Mealtime Again

Is your dog sniffing the food bowl… then walking away? You’re not alone. Many pet owners struggle with picky eaters, and it can be frustrating (and a little worrying). The good news? There are solutions.

Here’s how to help your dog get back on track at mealtime:

1. Rule Out Health Issues First
Before changing anything, visit your vet. Dental problems, stomach issues, or even anxiety could be behind your dog’s lack of appetite. Once health problems are ruled out, you can confidently adjust their diet.

2. Stick to a Feeding Schedule
Dogs thrive on routine. Feed your dog at the same times every day, and remove uneaten food after 15–20 minutes. This trains them to eat when food is available—no more grazing all day.

3. Avoid Too Many Treats
If your dog is getting lots of snacks during the day, they might not be hungry at mealtime. Try cutting back on treats so they look forward to their regular food.

4. Try Warming Up the Food
Warming your dog’s food slightly (especially wet or homemade food) can release tempting smells. Just make sure it’s not too hot—lukewarm is perfect.

5. Mix In Toppers or Broth
Add a spoonful of plain chicken, beef, or low-sodium broth to dry kibble. These “toppers” can make even the blandest food more exciting. Just don’t overdo it—keep meals balanced.

6. Switch Up the Texture
Some dogs prefer crunch. Others like soft food. Test different textures—kibble, wet food, or a mix—and see what your dog responds to best.

7. Make Mealtime Calm
Picky eating can be linked to anxiety. Create a quiet, distraction-free environment during meals. Avoid feeding near loud noises or other pets that may cause stress.
